Grandparents, and other loving members of the extended family can be a great source of support to children and young people. Children who have had the unconditional support of extended family can benefit from increased self confidence and a sense of well being. They can also take the pressure off parents, particularly the primary carer in the school holidays. When it works well and with mutual respect its a win win as most grandparents are keen to spend time with their grandchildren.
We love this quote from a 13 year old "In the holidays Gran and Gramps always say "pop round if you need anything" and I go round quite a lot. It's not exactly that I need anything-though Gran is a stellar cook-it's that hanging out with them makes a change from hanging out with my mates."
